Our purpose is to create room for attention in an age that rewards speed and certitude. The Periscope exists for questions that require patience. We publish work that pauses over what others hurry past, returns to what has been forgotten, and considers the forces that continue to act beneath public events, private lives, inherited beliefs, and cultural habits.

We believe that serious writing can alter perception. A carefully pursued idea can expose the assumptions beneath an argument and recover the true cost hidden inside an abstraction. Alternatively, it can reveal a connection that ordinary discussion has left untouched. Our pages give writers the space to think at full length and readers the chance to encounter complexity without being rushed toward a conclusion.
